Balendra Shah, popularly known as Balen Shah, has once again captured the national spotlight in Nepal. The former rapper-turned-politician, who made history as Kathmandu’s independent mayor in 2022, is now a central figure in the lead-up to the March 5, 2026, general elections. After resigning from his mayoral post just days ago, Balen has joined the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and emerged as a key challenger to established political forces.

From Kathmandu Mayor to National Contender
Balen Shah first rose to prominence by winning the Kathmandu Metropolitan City mayoral election as an independent candidate, defeating heavyweights from major parties. His tenure focused on urban reforms, heritage preservation, and anti-corruption measures, earning him massive support among urban youth and Gen Z.
In late 2025, he joined the RSP and positioned himself for national politics amid post-protest political shifts following the September 2025 Gen Z movement that ousted the previous government. On January 18, 2026, Balen officially resigned as mayor to contest the upcoming elections, marking his formal entry into the national arena.
He has filed his candidacy from Jhapa-5 and is seen as the alliance’s potential prime ministerial face, directly challenging veterans like former PM KP Sharma Oli.

Campaign Momentum and Public Support
Balen’s campaign rallies have drawn massive crowds, reflecting his enduring popularity. His alliance with RSP and other emerging forces is viewed as a “generational shift” challenging Nepal’s traditional parties. Supporters praise his straightforward style and focus on transparency, good governance, and youth empowerment.
Recent Controversy: The Luxury Vehicle Buzz
Amid the campaign trail, a photo of Balen using a black Land Rover Defender has gone viral, sparking online debate about transparency and lifestyle as a public figure. Critics question the vehicle’s ownership and cost, while supporters defend it as a non-issue compared to larger governance challenges.
Legacy in Kathmandu
Even after resignation, Balen’s mayoral achievements—road expansions, waste management improvements, and heritage site cleanups—continue to be highlighted by fans.

What’s Next?
As elections approach, Balen Shah represents a wave of alternative politics in Nepal. Whether he secures a parliamentary seat or influences the broader landscape, his move from local to national stage has undeniably made him the most talked-about figure in Nepali politics today.
